Chinatown

In Chinatown, open-air vegetable markets spill onto the sidewalk, with exotic produce and unusual foods to examine. Restaurants have tanks full of fish and lobsters in their front windows, gift and souvenir shops are filled with lanterns, satin slippers, tiny Buddha statues, and more mechanical toys than you can imagine. A visit to Chinatown is like navigating a crowded maze. Stop in the Mahayana Temple at the corner of Canal St. and Bowery. Inside presides the largest golden Buddha in the city - leave a dollar in the donation box and select a fortune to take with you. Try dim-sum, read-bean buns, and don't miss the tiny Hong Kong cakes baked on the spot by a street vendor.
