Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island

If we want a free way to just get out onto the water and see the statue from a distance, take the Staten Island Ferry. 

If we want to visit Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty, admission is free, but we must purchase a ferry ticket ($12 for adults, depart from Battery Park 8:30 to 4:30 pm). 

We can also get a reserve ticket for Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty and a monument pass if we want to go into the Statue of Liberty (both are free and are for specific times). These often run out and should be requested online as far in advance as possible. They will save a lot of time because we get priority entry and don't have to wait in as long a line at the sites. Or we can get a flex pass, which must be used within a specified 3-day period - no monument pass with a flex pass.
